Once only a wild growing fruit, it is believed the strawberry was first put into cultivation by the French in the early 1300s. The plant that we know it as today is called Fragaria ananassa and was bred from 2 varieties that Spanish colonists bought back to Europe.
The Australian commercial strawberry industry harvested over 40,000 tonnes during the 2003/04 financial year. That had a farmgate value of over $200 million. Of that, the state of Queensland grew over a third of total production. Australia still imports nearly half of its strawberry requirements.
Home Gardeners can also grow strawberries with great results. You can grow them from seed, or buy strawberry runners that have been produced by certified growers.
